Abstract

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Husseini al-Sistani is one of the prominent scholars of Twelver Shia Islam in Iraq and the world. He holds significant influence in the Islamic world in general and particularly in Iraq, being regarded by many as a prominent religious authority. He has contributed to achieving peace and social security, as well as playing a role in maintaining and stabilizing the system. This leadership role in managing societal affairs is one of the most crucial roles of the Grand Jurist. He has issued numerous religious edicts and directives emphasizing the necessity of maintaining social peace and security, urging unity and peaceful coexistence among different sects and religions, and avoiding sectarian and ethnic conflicts. His famous fatwa of "defensive jihad" against ISIS represented a pivotal turning point in preserving the social fabric, thereby altering the landscape of the situation. This came at a time when the country was on the brink of collapse, amidst dire circumstances, destruction, and people's terror. His fatwa helped restore life to many people, especially after the significant response from the populace. It returned stability, tranquility, and the safe nature of the society.
